The leader of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has provided an explanation for the deletion of his tweet denouncing the murder of Deborah Yakubu.
Recall that Deborah Yakubu, a student studying home economics at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto State, was allegedly blasphemed against and stoned to death and set afire earlier this year.
In addition to the deleted tweet, Atiku claimed that he later issued a statement denouncing the student’s death.

Remember that Atiku tweeted a complete denunciation of the murder a few hours after the tragedy, but he quickly removed the message after receiving threats from some of his supporters who said they would wait for him on election day.
However, in a speech at The People’s Townhall on Channels Television in Abuja on Sunday, Atiku denounced the murder and offered an additional justification for why the tweet had been deleted.
Atiku demanded that the tweet criticising the lynching of the Christian student be deleted because he did not agree with it.
Atiku said: “I requested the deletion of the tweet because I usually give my OK to every tweet.
“So I told them to erase it since I did not approve of it. You may see that I denounced that murder in my later statements.
In the Islamic faith, Atiku continued, “There is nowhere it is said or it is an injunction that you can go and take someone is life; nowhere, it has to be through due process.”
