Senate President Urges Media to Prioritize Climate Change Reporting on World Press Freedom Day

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obong Akpabio, has called upon Nigerian media practitioners to give special attention to reporting climate change issues. In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Akpabio emphasized the importance of this year’s World Press Freedom Day theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis.” He urged the media to take the lead in setting a climate change agenda and educating the public about the environment and the adverse effects of climate change.

Akpabio acknowledged the global concern regarding the environment and stressed that it is essential for the media to conscientiously report on climate issues. He highlighted that environmental conservation is crucial for human thriving and emphasized the need for public enlightenment and education on climate change, especially in the face of global warming challenges.

Furthermore, Akpabio commended Nigerian journalists for their dedication and sacrifices despite working under challenging conditions. He assured that the 10th National Assembly is committed to upholding freedom of the press and will not tolerate any actions that infringe upon the rights of journalists.
