Officers Face Criminal Charges in Connection with Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola’s Death
The Kwara State Police Command has announced that three dismissed officers have been charged in connection with the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. The officers, Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Samuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip, are facing charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.
Background of the Incident
The charges stem from an incident during a fuel hike protest by students in Ilorin, where the 21-year-old National Diploma 2 student in Electrical/Electronics was allegedly killed by police officers. The tragic event sparked widespread condemnation and prompted the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to order an investigation into the matter.
Findings of the Investigation
Following a thorough investigation, the officers were found guilty of misconduct, including leaving their designated beat, engaging in corrupt practices, and unlawfully exercising authority. As a result of these findings, the officers were dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force effective October 4, 2024, after an internal disciplinary trial.
