New Policy Aims to Align Nigeria’s Education System with Global Standards
Abuja, Nigeria – The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has proposed a transition from Nigeria’s current 9-3-4 education system to a 12-4 model, ensuring a continuous, uninterrupted curriculum for better standardization and quality assurance.
Key Highlights of the Proposed Education Reform
1. Transition to a 12-Year Basic Education Model
Speaking at the 2025 Extraordinary National Council of Education Meeting in Abuja, Dr. Alausa emphasized the need to extend basic education to 12 years, saying:
“By doing so, Nigeria will align with global standards in preparing students for better tertiary education.”
The new model aims to:
✅ Provide a more structured learning experience
✅ Improve educational outcomes
✅ Enhance Nigeria’s economic development through a well-educated workforce
2. Addressing Nigeria’s Tertiary Admission Age Policy
The minister also discussed reviewing the 16-year age requirement for university admission. He expressed concerns that:
🔹 Talented students completing secondary school at 16 face delays in higher education
🔹 The waiting period could lead to mental health challenges and a waste of potential
🔹 Younger gifted students should be allowed to enroll in universities without unnecessary delays
3. Conversion of Federal Science and Technical Colleges
Dr. Alausa proposed converting Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) into Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs) to:
🔧 Close skill gaps in the labor market
🏭 Promote technical and vocational education
📈 Strengthen Nigeria’s industrial and economic development
4. Introduction of a National Anti-Bullying Policy
The extraordinary council meeting also discussed implementing a national policy on bullying, ensuring a safer learning environment for students across Nigeria.
