Electricity Supply in Abuja Disrupted Following Vandalism of Power Lines

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported another incident of vandalism affecting electricity transmission lines and cables supplying power to parts of Abuja.
Details of the Incident
The attack occurred in the early hours of Friday, targeting the 132kV transmission line and underground cable that transmits bulk power to the Central Area Transmission Substation in Katampe, Abuja.
Key areas impacted include:
- Maitama
- Wuse
- Garki
- Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of the Presidential Villa
The vandalism disrupted over 60% of power supply in these locations, affecting eight distribution feeders serving the Central Area.
Extent of Damage
The vandals reportedly:
- Stole 40 meters of 1x500mm conductor from two 132kV transmission lines.
- Targeted infrastructure near Menillum Park in Abuja.
Restoration Efforts
TCN’s engineers have been dispatched to the site to begin repairs, with efforts underway to restore power as quickly as possible.
In an appeal to residents, TCN’s Public Affairs Manager, Ndidi Mbah, urged vigilance and community cooperation to safeguard critical infrastructure.
Cost of Vandalism
The statement also highlighted the broader issue of vandalism:
- In 2024 alone, the government spent ₦8.8 billion to repair 128 damaged electricity towers nationwide.
Call for Action
Mbah called on Nigerians to support efforts to protect power infrastructure, emphasizing the significant economic and social impacts of such criminal activities.
