FRSC Defies NANS Threats, Vows to Continue Crackdown on Fake Number Plates
Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has firmly stated that it will not be deterred by threats from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) over its ongoing operation to impound vehicles with fake number plates.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, made this declaration in a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Wednesday.
🔹 FRSC’s Stand: Public Safety Comes First
Mohammed reaffirmed that the FRSC’s primary duty is to ensure the safety and security of all road users. The Corps, he stressed, remains committed to enforcing traffic laws and maintaining the integrity of the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS).
“We will not be intimidated by threats from any individual or group,” he said, referring to NANS’ warning to shut down any FRSC command that impounds students’ vehicles.
🔹 Crackdown on Fake Number Plates
The special operation against fake vehicle number plates was launched in response to:
✅ The rising abuse of Nigeria’s vehicle registration system
✅ Reports of forgery and duplication of number plates
✅ The need to enhance national security, as many crimes are vehicle-related
Mohammed warned that failure to address these issues could lead to a security crisis, undermining law enforcement efforts across the country.
🔹 NANS’ Response: A Call for Dialogue
The Corps Marshal criticized NANS’ threats, stating that students should be law-abiding rather than attempting to obstruct enforcement.
“It is difficult to comprehend that Nigerian students, who should promote law and order, would resort to issuing threats against a lawful enforcement operation,” he said.
Despite this, FRSC remains open to dialogue with the NANS leadership to clarify the operation’s objectives and ensure mutual understanding.
🔹 No Room for Intimidation
All FRSC Commanding Officers nationwide have been instructed to stand firm and not succumb to any intimidation while carrying out their duties.
“We will not compromise the objectives of the National Vehicle Identification Scheme or national security,” Mohammed assured.
