LASU/ASTON Symposium Inspires Change-Makers to Eradicate Sexual Violence Worldwide
The Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, has charged staff and students of the great citadel of learning to be catalysts for change that the society so desperately needs and create a world free of sexual violence.
The professor of physiology, who was ably represented by the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. Taiwo M. Salisu, made this charge on Monday, 6th November 2023 at a symposium organised by the Lagos State University and Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom which was held at Aderemi Makonjuola Lecture Theatre, main campus, Ojo. The symposium was titled “Preventing Sexual Violence on University Campuses in Nigeria”.
In her speech, Prof. Olatunji-Bello averred that sexual violence is an issue that has plagued societies across the globe far too long and is a topic that demands attention, action and commitment to change, which also requires a collaborative and sustained effort from Universities, Government, Non-Governmental Organisations, Communities and Individuals by standing in solidarity to dismantle the structures that perpetuate such violence and to build a world where consent, respect and equality are the norm.
The Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. Taiwo M. Salisu, in his address, appreciated the Pro-Chancellor, Aston University, Prof. Hannah Barlet, for collaborating with LASU on such a great event. He averred that the research focuses on one of the disconcerting vices in the Nigerian society, adding that with the growing population of the country and student population on Universities campuses, it is essential to put modalities in place to control and checkmate the problem of sexual violence.
The Head, English Department, Prof. Pius Akhimien, while delivering his speech, affirmed that the symposium is very dear to the heart of the university, and the department equally frowns at gender based violence. He further added that “…the department will build an environment where both genders can reach their full potential and not be subjected to any form of gender discrimination or oppression. The department will also adopt relevant measures from the symposium, for the university’s implementation” .
Pro-Chancellor, Aston University, Prof. Hannah Barlet, in her remarks, appreciated everyone present and urged students and staff to maximize the avenue the symposium will create with the launching of the PSV website.
Lead Researcher on Prevention of Sexual Violence in Nigeria Universities, Dr. Olawunmi Oni-Buraimoh, in her presentation, stated that the purpose of the programme is to map, measure, and solve problems related to sexual violence in Nigeria. She highlighted the objectives and agencies of sexual violence in Lagos State, and recommended that schools should continue to engage their students and staff to create more ideas around issues as they arise in handling and prevention of sexual violence.
Dr. Olawunmi Oni-Buraimoh launched the website “www.PSV.com.ng” , which will gradually accommodate willing mentors and mentees across Nigeria and the UK.
Ag. Director, Centre for Response and Prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (CRPSGBV), Dr. Igot Ofem, who was represented by Dr. Olawunmi Macualey-Adeyelure gave the closing remarks, and vote of thanks was done by Prof. Omolola Ladele.
The symposium was well attended by staff and students of the university.
