The Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM and her administration are keen as well as focused on consolidating on the gains and the achievements made as the Administration clocked two (2) years in office.
This was the major thrust of the media chat, the Vice Chancellor had with student journalists and campus influencers on Tuesday, 3 October 2023 at the Conference Room, 6th Floor, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, main campus, Ojo, Lagos.
Professor Olatunji-Bello came into the room with all smiles, an indication of satisfaction of the modest achievements of the two years under review. She was supported at the chat by other principal officers, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Funsho Omobitan, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Adenike Boyo, the Registrar, represented by the Deputy Registrar (Academic Staff Establishment), Mr Samuel Otesanya, the Bursar, represented by the Deputy Bursar (Budget and Budgetary Control), Mr Adekunle Odunlami and the University Librarian, Dr. Layi Adebayo.
The business of the day started on a gratitude note, with the Vice Chancellor appreciating all those who had made the last 730 days a memorable one. She acknowledged there were more jobs to be done in making the university the best in West Africa and beyond, which she insisted the administration was on the right path as she made her opening address.
The Professor of Physiology took time to highlight some of the modest achievements of the last two years, which include uninterrupted academic calendar; handing over of the biggest Students’ Arcade to the students;
Release of buses to LASUSU for ease of transportation; conducive learning atmosphere, with toilets built at Ojo & Epe campuses; 8,000 capacity bed-space hostel for students to be allocated next session; 96 bed-space hostel through LASU Development Fund (LASUDEF);
Renovation of hostels at Epe campus; installation of CCTV cameras at Ojo, Epe and Badagry campuses; renovation of lecture halls and new ones; accreditation of 21 new courses accross three Faculties and School, admission has commenced into those courses, all courses have been fully accredited by National Universities Commission (NUC) ;
Scholarship for students with 4.5 CGPA and hundreds have benefitted in the last two years; sponsorship of students to local and international competitions, with some supported with cash reward in appreciation; internationalisation of the University, with about 20 foreign students in various courses; plagiarism software, digitalisation amongst other achievements.
Speaking further, the Vice Chancellor stated that as her Administration moves into the third year, she noted that the students remain an integral part of the Administration, hence, the need for the chat to get them informed, get feed back that would help her and her team make informed decisions.
She ended her address by describing LASU students this way “I like my students. I care for you, and I hold you very dear to my heart. We have one of the best and most well-behaved students in this country. I am proud of Lagos State University (LASU) students.
I am excited about your future. Our graduates are doing great things. The future of our students is very bright. These students can compete with anyone and will stand out. We must continue to hear from you and respond to your needs”.
In her response to some of the questions, the Vice Chancellor disclosed that, as part of the development, the University would soon commence the production of its own bottled water and the Administration would continue its infrastructural development across its campuses, buildings and roads inclusive.
She announced a bus palliative measure that would ease transportation of the students off campus in the mornings and evenings. She equally informed that the current semester has been extended by two (2) weeks.
On a final note, the 2024 All Africa University Games, to be jointly hosted by LASU and University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Olatunji-Bello assured the University was ready and would play a good co-host.

Recall that the Governor, Lagos State and Visitor to LASU, Mr Babajide Sanwoolu announced the appointment of the Vice Chqncellor on 17 September 2021 and Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM assumed office on 20 September 2021. Her Administration clocked two (2) years on 20 September 2023.

Others are Deputy Reigistrar, Exams and Records, Mrs Abiodun Meruwoma, Director, Health Services, Dr. Nasir Ariyibi, Chief Security Coordinator, CSP Wale Ojo (Rtd) and Chairman, Scholarship Committee, Dr. Fatai Abatan.
The President, LASUSU, AbdulRahman Agoro and the Speaker, Sanusi equally attended the programme.
