Global Food Shortages: Australia to Rescue Bangladesh and Myanmar With $135 million
As global food, water, and shelter shortages hit developing countries, Australia has said it will give partner organisations in Bangladesh and Myanmar access to $135 million in 2022–2023.
The support package adds to the $480 million that has been given to residents of Myanmar, internally displaced Myanmar citizens, Rohingya, and host communities in Bangladesh since 2017.
The Australian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday that it will also provide crucial protection, education, and health services for those who are most in need, including women, girls, and persons with disabilities. You can read more of such stories at Credible News.
The number of people in Myanmar who require humanitarian aid has increased from 1 million to an estimated 14.4 million since the military takeover in February 2021.
Australia applauded Bangladesh for its continued assistance to the more than 919,000 displaced Rohingya who depend on humanitarian aid to survive, while also acknowledging the ongoing effects on the communities that host the Rohingya.
According to the Australian foreign ministry, “Australia’s humanitarian assistance will be supplied through the United Nations, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and non-governmental organisations.”
“Each of the partner organisations has a track record of providing impartial, independent humanitarian aid to individuals in need. In order to prevent Australia’s support from directly assisting or legitimising the military dictatorship in Myanmar, they have been carefully picked.”
