Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared that its protracted strike will be temporarily called off on October 17.
The tempoary call off is sequel to October 7,2022 order by the industrial court and court of appeal, in response to a memorandum signed by the federal government.
Professor Osodeke in a release Tuesday, October 11 said: “The strike that began on February 14 has been temporarily suspended.”
Osodeke said: ”As a result, all students are urged to resume full-time activities on Monday, October 17. “While suspending the strike, our union will not hesitate to reconsider its position if the government violates the signed statement of action.”
“We are law-abiding citizens and would not want to violate the court order; also, the speaker of the House of Representatives has requested that we call off the strike while the government addresses the remaining issues,” Osodeke added.
Recall that ASUU legal counsel, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, had Monday disclosed that the Academic Staff Union of Universities strike would be called off in days rather than weeks.
He stated this on Monday, October 10, in Lagos, at the book launch of Lanre Arogundade’s Breaking Coconut With Your Head.

In the next two days, the ASUU strike would mark eight months since Nigerian undergraduates have been away from home over certain demands unmet by the Federal Government.

According to Falana, the legal struggle between the teachers and the federal government would be resolved outside of the courtroom.
The union commenced the nationwide industrial action on February 14, 2022, and has extended it several times due to its inability to reach a substantial agreement with the federal government.
