Nigeria Endorses China’s Global Governance Initiative as Key Step Toward Inclusive International Order

The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally endorsed China’s newly launched Global Governance Initiative (GGI), describing it as a “timely and thoughtful contribution” to strengthening the international system.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria commended China for unveiling the initiative during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus (SCO+) meeting held in Tianjin on September 1, 2025.
“The Global Governance Initiative represents a timely and thoughtful contribution to ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening the international system,” the statement read.
What the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) Stands For
The Global Governance Initiative, unveiled ahead of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, builds on China’s earlier international frameworks, including:
- Global Development Initiative (GDI)
- Global Security Initiative (GSI)
- Global Civilization Initiative (GCI)
The GGI seeks to address pressing global challenges, such as:
- Broader representation in international institutions
- Strengthening adherence to international law
- Tackling climate change and environmental risks
- Bridging digital inequality
- Regulating emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and outer space
Nigeria’s Position on the GGI
Nigeria welcomed the GGI’s focus on five core principles:
- Sovereign equality of nations
- Rule of law in global affairs
- Commitment to multilateralism
- People-centered governance
- Results-oriented global action
As one of Africa’s largest economies and an active voice in multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria views the GGI as an opportunity to:
- Advance reforms in the United Nations system
- Ensure inclusive governance in new and emerging domains like AI and digital technologies
- Strengthen Africa’s position in global decision-making
- Promote equitable and sustainable development
Alignment With Nigeria’s Development Goals
The Ministry emphasized that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s:
- National development strategy
- Principle of strategic autonomy
- African Union Agenda 2063
It further noted that Nigeria remains committed to collaborating with partners across the Global South to foster consensus, strengthen regional cooperation, and contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive global order.

By backing the Global Governance Initiative, Nigeria reaffirmed its enduring commitment to:
- Building a just and inclusive world order
- Promoting shared responsibility and mutual respect
- Supporting the aspirations of all peoples through cooperative governance
