YABATECH Leads the Way in Gender-Responsive Pedagogy Training

Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has made history by becoming the first tertiary institution in Nigeria to train and certify over 40 staff members in Gender-Responsive Pedagogy (GRP). This pioneering initiative is part of the college’s Girls’ Education and Skills Partnership (GESP) program and was facilitated by the International Network for Advancing Science and Policy (INASP), a UK-based organization.

The training, supported by UNICEF Generation Unlimited and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), aimed to equip educators with the knowledge and tools necessary to integrate gender-responsive teaching methodologies into classrooms.

The three-day ‘Train the Trainer’ workshop provided participants with essential skills to:

• Challenge gender biases in education.
• Promote equal participation among students.
• Create inclusive learning environments where all students, regardless of gender, can reach their full potential.

Dr. Funmilayo Doherty, the GESP Project Coordinator at YABATECH, highlighted the significance of this initiative in her welcome address. She emphasized that the participants are the first cohort of GRP trainers in Nigeria’s tertiary education system and will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education by expanding GRP knowledge.

Declaring the workshop open, the Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Abdul, praised the INASP team for collaborating with YABATECH’s GESP initiative. He underscored the importance of innovation in education, stating:
