President Bola Tinubu has granted all essential regulatory licences for the Kolmani Integrated Development Project, a groundbreaking oil exploration initiative situated between Bauchi and Gombe States. This move is seen as a strategic push to expand oil exploration in Northern Nigeria and drive industrial development across the country.
Presidential Green Light for Kolmani Project
The announcement of Kolmani Integrated Development Project came during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of the permanent site of the Bauchi Oil and Gas Academy in Alkaleri Local Government Area. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, made this known on Sunday. According to a statement issued by Nneamaka Okafor, his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, the minister explained that activating Nigeria’s dormant hydrocarbon assets was now a national priority.

“The need to activate all available oil platforms for increased production led President Bola Tinubu to approve the issuance of all critical regulatory licences for the Kolmani Integrated Development Project,” Lokpobiri said.
Tinubu’s Vision for Nigeria’s Energy Transformation
Senator Lokpobiri reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to maximizing the nation’s energy resources. He stated that President Tinubu was deliberate about transforming Nigeria’s energy sector into one that stimulates economic growth, reduces unemployment, and generates substantial national revenue.
“President Tinubu is intentional about transforming our energy landscape into one that fuels industrial growth, creates jobs, and enhances national revenue,” the minister stressed.
The project is part of broader reforms aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on oil imports while unlocking new energy opportunities across regions that were previously untapped.
Bauchi State’s Strategic Support for Energy Goals
The minister also praised Bauchi State for taking bold steps to support the Federal Government’s energy roadmap. The establishment of the Bauchi Oil and Gas Academy, he said, reflected the state’s forward-thinking approach to building indigenous capacity in the petroleum industry.
“With this academy, Bauchi is making a strategic contribution to the development of human capital needed to advance our oil and gas sector,” he noted.
Developing Manpower for the Oil Sector
Senator Lokpobiri further acknowledged the role of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) in building the skills and knowledge base necessary for the oil and gas industry. He expressed optimism that the new academy would work closely with PTDF to develop a strong, skilled workforce.
“PTDF has consistently played a key role in ensuring that our oil and gas sector remains not just active but future-ready,” Lokpobiri stated.
Governor Bala Mohammed Commits to the Project
In his remarks, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, commended the Federal Government for supporting the academy’s development. He highlighted its potential to become a hub for innovation and vocational training, not only for Bauchi State but for the entire country.
“This institution will be a foundation for skill acquisition and innovation that will benefit all Nigerians,” the governor said.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to support all initiatives that would enhance the success of the Kolmani Integrated Development Project and related infrastructure.
Renewed Momentum for Oil Exploration in the North
The Kolmani Integrated Development Project was originally launched in November 2022. It marked the historic start of oil exploration in Northern Nigeria, especially in the Kolmani River II oil field, located at the border between Bauchi and Gombe States.
Still on Kolmani Integrated Development Project, just last week, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), Bayo Ojulari, announced that oil drilling activities at the Kolmani field would resume immediately.
He explained that resuming exploration would revitalize closed businesses, stimulate economic activities, and increase wealth in the region.
“This project will bring opportunities to the region, leading to widespread benefits. We must return and continue what we started,” Ojulari emphasized.
Ajaokuta–Kano Gas Pipeline Project to Follow
Ojulari also disclosed plans to proceed with the construction of the Ajaokuta–Kano gas pipeline after the resumption of drilling at Kolmani. This critical infrastructure will improve gas distribution across northern Nigeria and drive further industrial development.
“We will continue drilling in Kolmani and other places. Afterward, we will complete the gas pipeline from Ajaokuta to Kano,” he stated.
