UNILAG Gets New Vice-Chancellor Friday
On Friday, October 7, the University of Lagos(UNILAG) Akoka will reveal the name of the next vice chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, who would succeed him.
Ogundipe, a professor of botany and the university’s 12th vice chancellor, will step down from his position in early November when his five-year term as vice chancellor has come to an end.
Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuosho, the university’s provost and chairman of the governing council, made the revelation on Monday during a celebration marking the university’s 60th anniversary at the college of medicine in Idi Araba.
The new vice-chancellor will be revealed and announced on Friday, according to him, who also claimed that the hiring process is nearing its conclusion.
He said the selection process is democratic and has been fair, thorough and transparent and that whoever emerges eventually is the choice of God Almighty and not that of man.
He did, however, compliment the departing vice chancellor for his enthusiasm and dedication to UNILAG’s growth during his five years in office.
In the past 60 years of teaching, research, and community participation, he claimed, UNILAG had successfully carried out its three main goals.
However, he criticised the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) current statewide strike, claiming that the development has had a significant negative impact on the nation’s university system.
So, he continued, “I hope the problem is handled quickly so that life may return to normal on all public university campuses, including UNILAG.
In his welcome speech, the departing vice-chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, expressed his eternal gratitude to God for His constant guidance and support during the 38 days he still has left in his tenure as the university’s vice-chancellor.
He claimed that UNILAG had established itself as a household name in the fields of research, innovation, and community services in addition to academia.
He claimed that even if the current ASUU strike is keeping students and faculty off campus at the present, the 60th celebration is still going on and will last for a full year.
He claimed that because the strike is nationwide and affects all federal universities, UNILAG is powerless to halt it.

He claimed that UNILAG has bigger plans for the future, especially for the 20 years from now when the university would be 100.
Professors Olakunle Iyanda and Laide Abass, two of the institution’s founding members, recounted their memories of their time as students and faculty members in separate speeches at the event.
For instance, Prof. Iyanda, who was admitted to the university in 1962 and later served as the Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, stated that there were only 400 students enrolled overall at the time, and they thoroughly loved their education.
He recalled how Prof. Saburi Biobaku, the second vice-chancellor of the institution, was stabbed during the senate procession after he delivered his acceptance speech as the vice-chancellor of the university, by a 200-level student of the university’s law department.
The first forced shutdown of the university, according to him, was caused by the occurrence.
