BREAKING: NUC Gives Vice-Chancellors Ultimatum to Reopen Varsities and Begin Lectures Immediately
The vice-chancellors of Nigerian universities, who are presently obeying the ASUU strike order, have been instructed by the Federal Government to reopen institutions and allow students to continue lectures.
The order was conveyed on Monday to the vice-chancellors through the National Universities Commission (NUC).
This was stated in a letter written by Professor Abubakar Rasheed, the commission’s executive secretary, and signed by Sam Onazi, the NUC’s director of finance and accounts.
A letter issued to all vice-chancellors, pro-chancellors, and chairs of governing councils of federal institutions was made exclusively available to The PUNCH on Monday.
Part of the letter states, “Ensure that ASUU members promptly resume/commence lectures; restore the regular activities and routines of the various university campuses.”

It was gathered that Nigeria’s national industrial court ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end its current statewide strike on Wednesday.
Since February 14, ASUU had been on strike to raise awareness of its demands, which included more financing for universities and a review of professors’ pay among other things.
ASUU discussions with the Federal Government have frequently come to an impasse.
As a result, the strike was contested in court by the Federal Government.
James Igwe, the government’s attorney, asked the court for an interlocutory injunction to stop ASUU from continuing the strike while the substantive lawsuit was being adjudicated.
