The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has Thursday declared that 2.7 million registered voters in Kano State are disqualified to cast their votes during the 2023 general elections.
The number of ineligible registrants in Kano State was determined by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday at the conclusion of the Automated Biometric Identification System.
At a meeting with representatives of election stakeholders, Zango Abdu, the new resident electoral commissioner in Kano, stated that 12,298,944 people had successfully registered as new voters at the conclusion of the operation.
The Kano State preliminary voter registration list now has 5,927,565, he stated.
It is preliminary because Section 19 (1) and (2) of the Electoral Act of 2022 requires the Commission to display the hard copies of the voters registers for each registration area (Ward) and Local Government Area for a period of two weeks for public scrutiny, claims, and objections, not later than 90 days before a general election, as well as publish the entire register on the Commission’s website at the same time.

The REC also reaffirmed that, in accordance with Sections 83, 85, 87, 88, 90, 91, 92, and 95 of the Electoral Act of 2022, the commission will continue to keep an eye on political party activities and track the finances of all political parties.
For the proper and peaceful conduct of political party campaigns, rallies, and processions, he urged politicians to carefully review and pay attention to the provisions of the Constitution, the Electoral Act, The Police Act, and The Public Order Act.
He also added that the commission would continue to track the campaign finances and its activities, as required by law.
The REC further emphasised that the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System for voters accreditation and the transfer of results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal on Election Day would go as planned.
He concluded by stating that there would be no incident form that would permit ineligible voters to cast ballots during elections using another voter’s Permanent Voters Card.
