Ilaje Community in Crisis: Culvert Collapse Leaves Thousands Stranded
A culvert that connected Atijere Town in Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State, with Ondo State through Ogun State has been swept away by torrential rains, cutting off thousands of drivers and residents of the village from the rest of the world.
No one or any vehicle can leave or enter the town because of the damage the weekend flood caused, according to our correspondents who visited the area.
Some of the people who spoke with reporters pleaded with the authorities to intervene swiftly on their behalf because the incident had paralysed their socioeconomic activity.
The Molokun of Atijere, Oba Samuel Adeoye, pleaded with the Ondo State government, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and the Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (OSOPADEC) to rescue the citizens immediately on behalf of his people.
“This is the only road linking my community and it’s from Ogun state axis. We don’t have any road yet connecting us to Ondo state.
“We appeal to the Ondo State government, OSOPADEC and NDDC to rescue us. Our people are suffering already over the collapsed culvert.”
Oba Adeoye demanded that the authorities immediately create a way for people to enter and exit the town by reconstructing the culvert.
The monarch also pleaded with senator Jimoh Ibrahim of Ondo South and members of the Ilaje, Ilaje/Ese-odo federal constituency to speak up for the people and act quickly to prevent food shortages and other economic difficulties for the locals.
