Africa’s richest man and Group President of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), Aliko Dangote, donates N15 billion to the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH) in Wudil, Kano State.
The billionaire philanthropist and Chairman of the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) made this announcement during the university’s 5th convocation ceremony. His generosity marks a major investment in Nigeria’s educational development and scientific innovation. “It is in this vein that I wish to use this opportunity to announce the launch of the five-year development plan that I envision for this institution,” Dangote said.
According to him, the Dangote donation will be dedicated to transformative projects that include
- Construction of modern student hostels
- Establishment of a world-class engineering laboratory
- Development of a fully-equipped, multipurpose computer laboratory with 24/7 internet access
- Installation of a mini-solar power plant to ensure stable electricity supply
- Construction of a befitting Senate building for administrative functions
These developments are expected to drastically improve both academic and living conditions on campus.
Empowering graduates through employment opportunities
In a move to connect academic achievement with practical career development, Dangote also revealed that his companies would reserve post-NYSC employment slots for top-performing graduates in engineering and related disciplines. Beneficiaries will have the opportunity to work at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Dangote Cement Plants, and other business subsidiaries.
He further explained that sustaining a specialized institution like ADUSTECH requires more than government support. That’s why the Aliko Dangote Foundation stepped in to provide critical financial aid, including the payment of the university’s electricity bills to alleviate financial pressure.
“Additionally, to support the infrastructure drive of the university, we built two hostels with 500-bed spaces each for male and female students,” he noted.
To further support uninterrupted academic activities, the university was connected to a 33 KVA power line. A 2.5 MVA transformer along with six step-down transformers was also provided, ensuring stable electricity essential for learning and research.
ADUSTECH’s growth and Dangote’s visionary support
Reflecting on the university’s remarkable progress, Dangote praised its founders for their vision. From a humble beginning with only 88 students, the university now boasts a population of 21,877 students, with 18,000 graduates celebrated in the recent convocation.
“This is a remarkable milestone,” he remarked.
Kano State Governor and others commend Dangote’s commitment
Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf of Kano State expressed profound gratitude to Dangote for his unwavering commitment to education and national development. He described the billionaire as a visionary industrialist and an exemplary African patriot.
“All of us will continue to remember you as a visionary and illustrious African industrialist,” the governor said.
Academic excellence and recognition at convocation
During the event, Vice Chancellor Prof. Musa Tukur Yakasa acknowledged the academic achievements of over 18,000 graduates produced in the past decade. He also highlighted major milestones, including successful program accreditations and innovative research contributions from students and alumni.
A notable mention was made of a mathematical digital model developed by Mahmoud Mubarak, a product of the institution, which is being used to measure deforestation density—a significant contribution to environmental science.
Honorary degrees awarded to distinguished Nigerians
In recognition of their contributions to Nigeria’s economy and society, several dignitaries received honorary doctorate degrees from ADUSTECH. They include:
