Senate Assures Nigerians of 2023 Elections, Despite Insecurity and Census
The National Population Commission’s planned census and the current state of insecurity in Nigeria have been guaranteed by the Senate that they will not have an impact on how the general elections in 2023 are conducted.
Elections will take place in 95% of the country, according to Senator Kabiru Gaya, the chairman of the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission, who made this statement during a press conference on Wednesday after defending the budget report of his committee before the Committee on Appropriations.

Former Kano State governor Gaya claimed that his group had several interactions with INEC management.
He said that the INEC had provided documentation from several security agencies demonstrating that the security situation will not interfere with the elections.
The general elections will take place in 2023, he declared. Elections will take place in more than 95% of the nation, it is guaranteed. There are already plans in place to secure vulnerable sites during the election.
“More security precautions would be taken to ensure that there are no interruptions at the polls,”
Gaya said that the National Population Commission’s upcoming census wouldn’t affect how the elections were run because the two organisations in charge of the headcount and the polls could cooperate.
“Both the NPC and the INEC could even work together in such a way that there would be no interference,” he said. It makes no difference if the two exercises are close together. “They will not take place on the same day.”
The Chairman stated that the National Assembly would consider the INEC’s additional requests for the 2023 general elections, but he did not specify how much the electoral umpire was seeking.
