IPOB Protests Kanu’s Detention, Threatens 2023 Elections Boycott
Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra protested in Aba, Abia State, on Friday over the Federal Government’s refusal to release their leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The protesters vowed not to allow the South East to hold elections in 2023 unless their leader was released and Biafra granted them.
They urged Nigeria to disregard the 2023 elections in the South East if “our leader, Nnamdi Kanu, remains in DSS custody.”
The protest in Abia South local government areas was peaceful, non-violent, and was closely monitored by security forces.
The protesters threatened to shut down not only the state and South East economies, but the entire country, unless their leader was released from detention.
“Some of the courts requested that they return our leader to Kenya, where he was illegally abducted.”

“This is part of our renewed warning signal to the federal government that if they continue to detain Nnamdi Kanu, they should forget 2023 elections in the southeast,” the protesters said.
Protesters carried placards that read, among other things, “Release our leader, Nnamdi Kanu, without delay,” “Grant us the state of Biafra immediately,” “There will be no election in Igbo land in 2023,” and “What we need is a referendum for Biafra.”
Protesters warned residents to stay off the streets on Monday because next week’s sit-in will be closely monitored.
Meanwhile, Kanu’s family in Isiama Afaraukwu, Umuahia, has expressed concern that the group will intensify its protests in the coming days.
Emma Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, expressed this concern early Saturday morning, saying, “There might be more protests coming out, and they might be more massive this time.”
“All they are saying is that the current government must obey the court order.”
