Falana Petitions CBN to Reveal New Naira Notes Distributions Analysis to Banks
Femi Falana, a rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has written to the Central Bank of Nigeria asking information on the number of new naira notes delivered to commercial banks around the country.
Falana also ordered that the CBN produce a list of consumers who had withdrawn more than the N100,000 limit set by the central bank.
The Central Bank of Nigeria has maintained that it has printed enough fresh N200, N500, and N1,000 notes to go around, blaming politicians for hoarding the new notes.
Nevertheless, in a letter dated February 16, 2023, signed by Femi Adedeji, ESQ, Falana Chambers demanded that the CBN disclose data on how the new notes were distributed to commercial banks.
Falana said, ”Our attention has been called to your comments in which you claimed that certain unnamed politicians have mopped up the fresh naira notes that the Central Bank of Nigeria made available to all commercial banks.
According to Falana: “We are constrained to ask you to provide us with information about the quantity of the planned N200, N500, and N1,000 notes that the Central Bank of Nigeria distributed to each commercial bank.

“Moreover, we further ask that you give us a list of the commercial bank clients who have received more than N100,000 in funds that have been authorized by you.”
In addition, he warned legal action if the CBN did not deliver the data within seven days.
Falana continued, “As this request is made pursuant to the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2011, you are required to accede to our request within seven days of the receipt of this letter.
“TAKE NOTICE that if you fail or refuse to furnish us with the requested information before the deadline of seven days we shall not hesitate to pray to the Federal High Court to compel you to accede to our request.”
