FCT Police Begin Enforcement of Mandatory Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has commenced the enforcement of the mandatory Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance policy for all vehicle owners in the region.
Strict Compliance with Insurance Policy
A statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed that the enforcement follows the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Kayode Egbetokun.
The I-G had earlier announced on January 10 that nationwide enforcement of third-party insurance for vehicle owners would commence on February 1. The move aims to ensure compliance with road safety regulations and provide financial protection for road users.
What the Third-Party Insurance Covers
According to Adeh, vehicle owners must possess a valid Third-Party Insurance policy before driving on public roads. She explained that this mandatory policy is designed to protect road users from financial losses in the event of an accident.
“The policy covers damages caused to another person’s vehicle, property, or bodily injury resulting from an accident involving the insured vehicle,” she stated.
Adeh further emphasized that the initiative seeks to ensure accident victims receive necessary compensation while reducing the financial burden on vehicle owners.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
The FCT Police Command has warned that non-compliance will attract strict penalties. Officers assigned to enforce the policy have been instructed to carry out their duties professionally and courteously.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Olatunji Disu directed the enforcement officers to avoid any form of harassment or extortion while executing their responsibilities. Motorists are urged to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure a smooth implementation of the directive.
This enforcement underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to road safety and financial security for road users. Vehicle owners are therefore advised to obtain their Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance to avoid penalties.
