Buhari Unveils Nigeria’s New Naira Notes of N200, N500, N1000

President Muhammadu Buhari unveiled the new Nigerian naira notes of N200, N500, and N1000 today in Abuja.

The new Naira notes were unveiled exactly 28 days after the Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor announced the plan.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has also decided to adjust the date on which the Naira notes will enter circulation and become the new legal tender.

In October 2022, the Central Bank of Nigeria announced a fiat currency redesign policy to manufacture new notes for three of the naira denominations in circulation. You can read more of such stories at Credible News.

President Buhari thanked CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele for the Naira note policy during the launch of the new notes.

However, apparently taking a critical look at the new banknotes, there are no much pronounced difference from the old N200, N500 and N100, except the change of colours.

The 1000 Naira banknote is Nigeria’s highest-value paper money note. The images of Mallam Alijy Mai-Bornu and Dr Clement Nyong Isong appear on the obverse side of the N1000 bill.

Both men are governors, one of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the other of Cross River State in South Nigeria.

The 500 Naira Nigerian note is a Nigerian currency denomination. It was introduced in April 2001 and was the most valuable currency in Nigeria at the time.

The portrait of Nnamdi Azikiwe appears on the note’s obverse. The reverse side depicts an offshore oil region.

No changes were made to the image of the N200 notes, which features Ahmadu Ibrahim Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto, Northern Nigeria’s Premier.
