Iran Executes Convicted Israeli Spy Amid Ongoing Tensions with Israel

Iran’s judiciary announced today the execution of Mohammad-Amin Mahdavi Shayesteh, a man convicted of espionage for Israel, amid ongoing hostilities that have persisted for eleven consecutive days.
According to the Iranian judiciary, “Mohammad-Amin Mahdavi Shayesteh was hanged this morning for intelligence cooperation with the Zionist regime,” reflecting Iran’s terminology for Israel.
Shayesteh was accused of having connections with Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence agency. He was also found guilty of collaborating with Iran International—a Persian-language television network based in London known for its critical stance against the Iranian regime. Iranian officials have alleged links between this broadcaster and Israel, even designating it a “terrorist organization” during the widespread protests that erupted in 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman who died in custody after being arrested for not adhering to Iran’s strict dress code for women.
The Iranian government has a history of announcing arrests and executions of individuals purportedly associated with foreign intelligence agencies, particularly Mossad.
On Sunday, the judiciary pledged to expedite the processing of security-related cases. Authorities reported another execution that same day, identifying the individual as Majid Mosayebi, who was also accused of espionage for Mossad.
Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, head of Iran’s judiciary, stated on state television that cases involving support for Israel—referred to as a “usurping regime”—and those suspected of acting as internal agents for the enemy, would be prioritized in the court system.
Human rights organizations like Amnesty International have reported that Iran continues to be one of the world’s highest executioners, only second to China.
