LASUCOM’s 4th Dentistry Day Shines a Spotlight on the Transformative Impact of AI in Dental Education

The Lagos State University College of Medicine wrapped up its 4th Biennial Faculty of Dentistry Day on Thursday, 21st September, 2023 after a series of events and activities aimed at promoting dental health education and community engagement.

The 2-Day Event, themed “AI: Current Application and Future Use in Dentistry” , had the College’s dental faculty, staff and students come together to showcase their commitment to oral health and their dedication to serving the community.

In her opening remarks, the Chairman of the Event and Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji Bello, mni, NPOM commended the faculty for recognizing the transformative potential of the new technological frontier called Artificial Intelligence as it applies to the field of Dentistry.

“The theme for this lecture is a testament to the University and College’s commitment to embracing new cutting technology for the advancement of tertiary education and since AI has emerged as a transformative force in today’s world, the overall practice of Dentistry is not left out” she said.

Prof. Abiodun Adewuya , the Provost of the College and Chief Host of the event, expressed pride in the growth of the faculty and also stressed the significance of the chosen theme of focus saying, “Today’s topic is extremely important as across the globe it is already being utilized in various sectors and I am sure the Keynote Speaker is capable of doing justice to the subject”.

The Event pressed on with a faculty day lecture on the concept of Artificial Intelligence given by the Keynote Speaker, Professor Morenike O. Folayan (Professor of Child Dental Health) and an educational symposium open to both students and the College community. The symposium also covered a wide range of dental health and thought-provoking topics like the impact of outward migration of dental professionals on dental education and profession in Nigeria and the survivability of dentistry in view of migration.

Notable dental professionals like Prof. O. M. Gbotolorun (Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – LUTH) and Dr. Olabode A. Karunwi (Chairman, Schubbs Dental Clinics Ltd) shared their expertise and insights, helping attendees gain a better understanding of the ever-changing landscape of oral health education and the role dental practitioners, professionals and academicians play in bringing balance to it.

The day also featured presentations of dental research projects conducted by faculty members and students. These research showcases highlighted the cutting-edge work being done in the field of dentistry, including studies on innovative treatment methods, dental materials, and advancements in patient care. Awards and certificates were also presented to the speakers alongside the Best Academic and Non-Academic staff members of the Faculty.

Prof. Kehinde. E. Adebiyi , the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, spoke about landmark achievements of the faculty since its inception in October 2008 while also stating, “Our faculty is still growing and given all necessary support, the Academic and Non-Academic staff have resolved to continue to provide excellent training in the pursuit of our vision of being ‘The Preeminent Innovator in Oral and Craniofacial Health in Africa’.

One of the highlights of the Faculty of Dentistry Day was the community outreach program which commenced the celebration on Wednesday 20th of September and was held at the Olu of Ikeja Palace, Ikeja Lagos. Dental students, faculty members and Oral health professionals provided free dental check-ups and cleanings to deserved members, most especially market women of the College’s local community, Ikeja. This initiative aimed to address oral health disparities and ensure that everyone has access to essential dental care

The Faculty of Dentistry Day was a resounding success that emphasized the importance of dental health education, community engagement and the embracement of new and transformative technology.

By providing free dental services to the community and showcasing cutting-edge research and technology, the college demonstrated its commitment to improving oral health in the local community and beyond. This biennial event stands as a testament to the dedication of the College, the Faculty of Dentistry, its staff and students in their pursuit of excellence in dental education and patient care.
