Nigerian Military Operations Yield Major Security Breakthroughs Across Nigeria

The Nigerian military operations have recorded significant successes across multiple regions, reinforcing the nation’s ongoing battle against insecurity. From the arrest and neutralization of notorious criminals to massive recoveries of stolen crude oil and arms, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has intensified efforts to dismantle criminal networks threatening national security.
Key Kidnappers and Criminal Syndicates Neutralized
In a major breakthrough, troops neutralized Nkwachi Eze, widely known as Onowu, a notorious kidnapping kingpin who had long been on the military’s wanted list. His death represents a critical blow to the kidnapping syndicates operating in the South-East.
According to the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, Eze had coordinated several high-profile abductions and attacks in the region. His elimination sends a strong signal to others involved in organized crime.
In another successful operation, the military apprehended Buhari Umar, a suspected gunrunner and head of a kidnapping ring notorious for terrorizing Gombe, Bauchi, Plateau, and Kaduna states. His capture has disrupted one of the region’s most dangerous kidnapping networks.
Furthermore, troops under Operation Whirl Stroke arrested five suspected kidnappers in Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The suspects—Hassan Mohammed, Saleh Sani, Idi Yusuf, Adamu Danmai, and Hassan Bello—are currently under interrogation.
Oil Theft Crushed in Niger Delta Operations
Troops conducting Nigerian military operations in the Niger Delta cracked down on oil theft rings. No fewer than 430 individuals were arrested for engaging in illegal oil activities.

The forces uncovered and destroyed 95 illegal refinery sites, 351 crude oil cooking ovens, and 418 dugout pits. These efforts prevented crude oil theft operations estimated at over ₦1.9 billion. Additionally, security forces recovered 1,009,733 litres of stolen crude oil and 304,811 litres of illegally refined diesel.
Recovered assets include drilling machines, pumping equipment, vehicles, motorcycles, and large quantities of arms. Security forces also seized rocket-propelled grenade tubes and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), adding to the growing list of recovered weapons.
Terrorist Surrender and Civilian Rescue in the North-East
In Borno and Yobe States, under Operation Hadin Kai, several terrorists from ISWAP and JAS factions surrendered. These included women and children who had been trapped in insurgent camps.
Between April 30 and May 4, 2025, troops executed coordinated offensives in Askira Uba, Bama, Monguno, Konduga, and Gujba. These led to the neutralization of insurgents and the rescue of two kidnapped individuals.
Furthermore, troops arrested 29 terrorist logistics suppliers in Maiduguri, Monguno, Damaturu, and Gujba. The suspects were found in possession of vehicles, motorcycles, and ₦739,000 in cash, suspected to be used for financing terrorist activities.
Armed Forces Make Gains in North-Western States
Troops involved in Operation Fasin Yamma conducted aggressive patrols in Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, and Kaduna States. These patrols led to the neutralization of several bandits and the rescue of nine kidnapped civilians.
In Zamfara State’s Anka LGA, troops intercepted a truck carrying ₦3.35 million hidden under bags of fruit and onions—an apparent attempt to fund criminal groups discreetly.
North Central Operations Secure Communities
Operation Safe Haven in Plateau and Kaduna States achieved notable victories. Troops arrested eight suspected criminals in Jos South, Qua’an Pan, Mangu, Sanga, and Kaura LGAs. The operation led to the recovery of arms, motorcycles, livestock, and ammunition.
Acting on credible intelligence, troops also neutralized terrorists and rescued six captives during operations in Mangu, Bassa, Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Jos South.
South-East Engagements Maintain Pressure on Terrorists
In Imo, Anambra, and Enugu States, troops under Operation Udoka encountered terrorists and engaged them decisively. The confrontations in Orsu, Ideato, Ihiala, and Awgu LGAs led to the neutralization of several armed fighters.
Weapons, IED components, and ammunition were seized during the operations. A criminal suspect arrested in Awgu has been handed over to law enforcement agencies for further action.
Military Reaffirms Commitment to National Security
General Kangye emphasized the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN)’s unwavering commitment to securing lives and property. He encouraged Nigerians to report suspicious activities and assured them of continued military presence across troubled zones.
“The Nigerian military operations will remain proactive, transparent, and accountable in safeguarding national security,” Kangye noted. “We continue to operate within the rule of law and international standards for human rights.”
He also reassured the public that normalcy is being restored and urged citizens to go about their daily lives without fear.
