Nigeria’s Defence Chief Applauds Finland for Simon Ekpa’s Arrest, Eyes Extradition

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has lauded Finland for the recent arrest of Simon Ekpa, a factional leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). General Musa expressed hope that Ekpa’s extradition to Nigeria would soon follow, allowing him to face justice for his alleged role in orchestrating violence in the South-East region of the country.

In a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Musa stated, “The CDS is happy with his arrest in Finland, with the hope this will be a step towards his extradition to Nigeria so that he will face justice.”

A Step Toward Justice

Ekpa, known for his divisive rhetoric and advocacy for violent separatist actions, was apprehended in Finland on Thursday. He faces allegations of fueling terrorism in Nigeria’s South-East and is also accused of using social media platforms to incite unrest.

Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, noted that Ekpa’s apprehension marked a significant milestone in the Defence Chief’s consistent call for his arrest.

“Ekpa has played a deep role in promoting terrorism in the South-East region,” Buba stated.

Charges of Terrorism and Fraud

The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation confirmed that Ekpa and two other suspects, who reside in Helsinki, are facing charges related to financing terrorism. According to Detective Chief Inspector Otto Hiltunen, “The man has carried out this activity, among other things, on his social media channels.”

Ekpa’s arrest is the culmination of international cooperation in the investigation, with the suspects’ hearings scheduled for Thursday.

This is not Ekpa’s first encounter with Finnish authorities. In 2023, he was briefly detained over allegations of fundraising fraud.

Controversial Calls for Election Boycotts

Ekpa’s notoriety extends beyond his alleged involvement in violence. In 2023, he gained widespread attention for his calls to disrupt Nigerian elections. In a viral social media post, he declared, “No elections will be held! Nigerian elections will not be allowed in Biafran territory.”

His actions have been a source of tension between Nigeria and Finland, with Nigerian authorities urging greater accountability from the European nation regarding his activities.

Next Steps

As investigations unfold, the Nigerian government, led by the Defence Chief, is optimistic that the Finnish authorities will expedite the extradition process. This move is seen as critical to addressing the ongoing security challenges in the South-East and ensuring accountability for actions that have threatened national unity.
