“This dualization project is a clear testament to our commitment to accelerated development and fulfilling the promises made during our campaign,” the Governor stated. He highlighted the strategic importance of the dual carriageway, which not only connects various parts of the state to the coastal region but is also essential for the development of the proposed deep seaport and the overall economic progress of the area.
Unlocking the Potential of the Marine Economy
Governor Aiyedatiwa referenced the profound vision of the President for the Marine and Blue Economy, positioning Ondo State as a potential hub for this burgeoning sector. He expressed that the dualization project transcends mere transportation improvements; it aims to unlock the vast potential within the state’s maritime corridor.

He recalled the approval granted to Ondo State for the deep seaport during the final days of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, underscoring the state’s strategic significance in the national development agenda. “This Igbokoda-Okitipupa dualization project is one of the strategic infrastructure initiatives designed to proactively address the logistical and economic gaps that the deep seaport’s development will present,” he added.
Economic Impact: A Catalyst for Local Development
The Igbokoda-Okitipupa road project is poised to have a profound economic impact on the region. By enhancing transportation links, the dualization will facilitate the movement of goods and services, significantly reducing travel time and costs for businesses operating in the area. This improved accessibility is expected to attract new investments, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing.
With the road connecting the coastal region to inland markets, local farmers and producers will have greater access to larger markets, allowing them to sell their products more efficiently. This enhanced market connectivity will lead to increased sales, higher incomes for local producers, and ultimately, improved living standards for residents.
Moreover, the road is expected to create job opportunities during and after construction. Local labor will be employed in various capacities, including construction work, logistics, and maintenance, providing a boost to the local economy. In the long term, as businesses flourish due to improved infrastructure, more jobs will be created, contributing to reduced unemployment rates in the region.
Additionally, the enhanced infrastructure will support the growth of the tourism sector, allowing easier access to beautiful coastal attractions and cultural sites in the Southern Senatorial District. This influx of tourists will further stimulate economic activity, benefiting local hospitality businesses, artisans, and service providers.
Enhancing Quality of Life and Economic Opportunities
The Governor detailed the multi-dimensional benefits of the road project, noting its positive impacts on commerce, mobility, and the overall quality of life for residents in the Southern Senatorial District and beyond.
Engr. Abiola Olawoye, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing, provided further insights into the project specifications. He described the road as 27.5 kilometers long, featuring a 4-meter width, 6 meters of setback on both sides, and a 3-meter reservation for utility services. The road corridor spans 28 meters and includes hydraulic structures designed to enhance urban infrastructure.
Community Support and Commitment from Contractors
In a show of solidarity, local leaders including Chairmen of Ilaje and Okitipupa LGAs, Maurice Oripenaye and Andrew Ogunsakin, along with traditional rulers such as the Abodi of Ikale, Oba Babatunde Faduyile, and the Amapetu of Mahin Kingdom, Oba Segun Akinyomi, expressed their gratitude to the Governor for prioritizing road infrastructure in the district.
Project contractor Mr. Abdul Gorey also assured the community of his commitment to delivering the project on time and maintaining high-quality standards.
This landmark initiative signals a promising future for Ondo State as it embarks on a journey of growth and development, ensuring that the benefits of improved infrastructure are felt by all residents. With the potential to drive economic growth, enhance connectivity, and elevate the quality of life, the Igbokoda-Okitipupa Road project is a vital step towards realizing the state’s full economic potential.
