OPC Urges Afe Babalola to Show Understanding in Dele Farotimi Case

The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has called on elder statesman and legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola, to approach the defamation and cyberbullying allegations against rights activist Dele Farotimi with compassion and understanding.

In a statement issued on Friday by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yinka Oguntimehin, the OPC expressed concerns over the recent arrest and detention of Farotimi, a development that has sparked widespread public discourse.

Detention Raises Concerns

The OPC questioned the manner of Farotimi’s detention, emphasizing that defamation is fundamentally a civil matter that does not justify criminal arrest or detention.

“We are concerned that two illustrious sons of the Yoruba race—a father and elder statesman, Chief Afe Babalola, and his ‘son,’ who is also a lawyer and rights activist, Dele Farotimi—are engaged in a legal battle,” the statement reads.

A Call for Resolution

The organization underscored Chief Afe Babalola’s towering legacy in Nigeria’s legal and educational sectors, noting his contributions to the training of over 300 lawyers, including numerous Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs).

“With such a sterling reputation and global respect, no one can tarnish the image of this revered personality,” the OPC stated.

The group appealed to Chief Babalola to consider resolving the issue amicably, highlighting the value of wisdom and understanding in addressing disputes, especially those involving prominent figures of Yoruba heritage.
