Teachers In Benue Complain About Withheld Salaries For 13 Months
Teachers in Benue State’s public primary schools have protested the state government’s failure to pay their 13-month salary.
According to Levi Akuma, state chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, the backlog includes 10 months in 2017, December 2021, and February and March 2022.
Teachers had endured difficulty as a result of missed salaries, according to Akuma, who added that the union was talking with the state administration to avoid a strike.
According to the Daily Trust, the union recently requested teachers to stay at home for a brief period of time, but they have already returned to work.
“What happened recently wasn’t a strike, but our instructors stayed at home because they didn’t have money to bring themselves to work,” Akuma added.

“We, primary school teachers, were waiting for our August salary; we were waiting at a time when every one of our peers under the same administration got paid but we were not paid.
“So, instructors were complaining about not having enough money to go to work. At the moment, it was October. Then we asked the government for the money. The government paid up to 20 LGAs, but we only received three.
“In the end, the government paid the three LGAs so we came back to work.
“In 2017, the backlog was 10 months long, spanning March to December of that year. Then there’s December 2021, February and March 2022, and now September has been paid but not everyone has.

“I’m not sure how much money is owed. However, the total amount in 2017 was over N1.7 billion – that’s over N1.7 billion for the ten months. I didn’t do the summation this time, but it’s a large quantity of money.”
