Sunday Dare Accuses Obasanjo of Hindering Nigeria’s Democratic Progress

Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Public Communication and Orientation, has claimed that Nigeria’s democracy suffered significant setbacks under former President Olusegun Obasanjo. In a statement on his X account on Monday, Dare alleged that Obasanjo’s administration left behind a legacy of corruption and failed infrastructure, forcing successive administrations to clean up the mess.

Dare emphasized that President Tinubu is making strides in addressing these issues through his “Renewed Hope” agenda.

Obasanjo Lacks Moral Authority, Says Dare

Dare criticized Obasanjo’s recent comments at Yale University, stating that the former president has no moral authority to critique the current administration. He accused Obasanjo of prioritizing personal ambition, referencing his controversial third-term bid, and presiding over one of the most corrupt administrations in Nigeria’s history.

“Democracy suffered mortal wounds under his watch,” Dare said, adding that Obasanjo owes Nigerians an apology for his failures in governance.

The $16 Billion Power Scandal Under Obasanjo

Dare highlighted unresolved issues from Obasanjo’s tenure, particularly the alleged mismanagement of $16 billion meant for electricity projects. He described the investments as producing “megawatts of darkness” and lamented the lack of accountability.

Focus on Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ Agenda

Citing a Yoruba proverb, Dare urged Nigerians to ignore Obasanjo’s criticisms, labeling them as mere “market noise.” He reiterated that President Tinubu’s administration is focused on reforms that bring tangible relief to Nigerians.

“This administration will remain focused on bringing relief to Nigerians,” Dare assured, adding that Tinubu’s government is committed to its mission of restoring the nation.

A Call for Reflection and Constructive Dialogue

Dare advised Obasanjo to reflect on his contributions to Nigeria’s challenges instead of consistently criticizing his successors. He concluded by acknowledging Obasanjo’s comment that “there is hope” and invited the former president to engage in constructive conversations about Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.
