Tragedy Strikes Lagos as Massive Building with 800+ Rooms Collapses in Shocking Incident

After a school-turned-residential building in the Ketu neighbourhood of Lagos partially collapsed on Sunday, two people are still battling for their lives in a private hospital.

The event took place in Agboye Estate, which has around 800 rooms and hundreds of residents, on Oduntan Street in Ketu.

Heavy downpour that had been falling for several hours was what caused the collapse. On Sunday afternoon, as people were still attempting to save their possessions, the building collapsed once more, causing another building inside the compound to be completely destroyed.

Numerous families and individuals living on the block were forced to leave after the incident spread terror throughout the neighbourhood.

On Sunday evening, as members of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency fenced off the area, hundreds of residents could be seen transporting their possessions in various directions.

Lagos officials have designated the problematic site, which contained multiple substandard buildings, for demolition.

At least 12 rooms shared a single bathroom and toilet in the majority of the blocks that were built just inches apart from one another. There are often two people in each room, making a total of 24 people using one toilet.

In addition, the landlord, Onamo Agboye, forbids tenants from using electricity generators, electric kettles, air conditioners or even having significant social gatherings like birthday parties or naming ceremonies within the building.

Every day at 11:00 p.m., the lone entry into and out of the compound closes; nobody enters or exits after that time.

The Lagos State Government partially locked the structure in response to the article published by Saturday PUNCH at the time, but removed the ban a few days later. After Sunday’s tragedy, the landlord of Agboye Estate has since disappeared.
