What Will Happen If Buhari Fails To Obey United Nations’ Order On Nnamdi Kanu Release – Kolade-Otitoju

Popular television investigative journalist, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju has revealed what may likely happened if President Muhammadu Buhari failed to release leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB),R Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from imprisonment as ordered by the United Nations.
Recall that the United Nations had recently ordered Nigerian government to release the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
However, some Nigerians have consistently asked if the UN has the power to sanction the country, should it fail to accede to its demands.
Kolade-otitoju, while analysing this question on ‘Issues with Jide’, a politics programme aired by TVC news, said since Nigeria is under the United Nations is expected to release Kanu.
According to him, Nigeria is expected to conform to the conventions of the organisation as a member.
His words: “If you are signatory to certain UN conventions, the UN expects you to honour those conventions. In this case, the Nigerian government is a signatory to the UN Charter on extradition, so if they take any action that appears to be against the charter, the UN will take a deep view of it.
” The worst that we can do to ourselves is to be seen as a barrier nation (a nation that doesn’t respect international conventions). We’ve seen in the past, leaders being brought to justice for taking actions that did not go down well with the UN.
“These things happen, we’re not expecting punishment in the real sense of the word but I think there are other ways that the UN can get its message across.
“The Nigerian government will also be working to be on the good side of the UN on this matter. The deed has been done but I don’t think the current FG will agree to release Kanu unconditionally. Given the extent to which it has gone this time, his release has to come with some conditions”.
