In a heartwarming send-off, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) recently honored over eighty (80) retired staff members, marking their retirement after fulfilling the federal government’s mandated age of sixty-five (65). The event celebrated the significant contributions and dedication of these individuals, who have served the institution with distinction.

The ceremony, which recognized retirees from both the 2023 and 2024 cohorts, was attended by key figures including the chairman of the governing council, Professor Funsho Afolabi, college management, staff, family members of the retirees, student representatives, and leaders from staff unions.

Professor Afolabi emphasized that the event was not just a farewell but a celebration of a remarkable career and an opportunity to reflect on the impact these retirees have made. He described the occasion as bittersweet, highlighting that retirement marks not an end, but a new beginning filled with freedom to explore new opportunities.

“We gather not to say goodbye, but to celebrate a remarkable chapter and welcome a new beginning,” he stated. According to him, retirement is a transition that allows individuals to step away from the daily grind and into a liberating phase of life. He further acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the retirees, expressing gratitude for the indelible marks they have left on the institution.

The rector, Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Abdul, also acknowledged the retired staff’s dedication and contributions to the college’s success. He underscored the importance of viewing retirement as a joyous milestone, a time for reflection, and an opportunity to spend cherished moments with family. Dr. Abdul encouraged the retirees to remain connected with YABATECH, offering their wisdom and guidance as needed.

Health was a significant theme during the event, with the Medical Director, Dr. Samuel Nubi, urging retirees to prioritize their well-being. In his presentation titled “Health in Retirement,” Dr. Nubi discussed the health challenges that can arise in later years, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to ensure a fulfilling retirement.
