YABATECH Launches Centre of Excellence in Optometry to Combat Blindness

Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) is set to establish a Centre of Excellence in Optometry, aimed at addressing the rising incidence of blindness and enhancing optometric services. This initiative is in collaboration with the Al-Basar International Foundation, featuring state-of-the-art facilities designed for comprehensive eye care.
Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Abdul, the rector of YABATECH, announced this development during the recent Free Eye Care Medical Outreach Program. The event successfully screened 4,000 individuals and facilitated cataract surgeries for 400 patients in Lagos, in partnership with the Al-Basar Foundation, Yaba Local Council Development Area, Iwaya Community, the Ministry of Health, and Gbagada General Hospital.
During the outreach, Dr. Abdul emphasized the necessity of specialized programs to groom students into adept professionals in optometry. He stated, “We aim to create a Centre of Excellence in Optometry and Optometry Services, where vision can become a reality, supported by the Al-Basar Foundation.”
Expressing gratitude to everyone involved in the outreach, Dr. Abdul remarked, “Our collaborative effort in serving the community is invaluable. The success we achieved would not have been possible without each participant’s contribution.” He also acknowledged the consultants whose expertise ensured the program’s success, highlighting that their exceptional performance has led to the ongoing approval of their medical licenses by the government. Furthermore, he extended his appreciation to the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for sponsoring the initiative.
Dr. Farrukh Mahmoru, Chief Consultant of the Al-Basar Foundation, commended YABATECH’s dedication to education and skill development. He noted, “Your unwavering commitment despite challenges has been remarkable.” Dr. Mahmoru expressed gratitude for the trust patients placed in the team, stating, “Seeing the smiles on their faces is the greatest reward we could ask for.”
He highlighted the transformative nature of the outreach, aiming to restore vision so individuals can fully engage with their communities. “We believe everyone deserves the gift of sight, and through this initiative, we are turning that belief into reality,” he added. Dr. Mahmoru also acknowledged the vast needs that still exist and expressed optimism for future collaborations to extend their reach and impact.
Dr. Azmat Shah, Regional Project Director of the Al-Basar International Foundation, noted the organization’s commitment to preventing blindness in Africa and Asia, with a focus on establishing eye hospitals and conducting mobile outreach programs, particularly in Africa. He announced plans to open a new eye hospital at YABATECH to serve the entire South-West region.
He expressed gratitude to the King Salman Relief Centre for their ongoing support and commended YABATECH’s management and staff for their tireless efforts in making the outreach a success.
Dr. Nubi Samuel, Chief of Medical Services at YABATECH and Chairman of the Medical Committee, praised the Al-Basar team for their exemplary work. He reported that over 4,000 eyes were screened, with 367 cataract surgeries performed, while 80 patients scheduled for surgery failed to attend due to unfounded fears.
Lastly, Dr. Masu’d Ajala, Director of the Centre for Linkages, Partnership and International Relations at YABATECH, remarked that the collaboration with the Al-Basar Foundation, now in its third iteration, exemplifies the power of strategic partnerships in achieving community impact and fostering academic excellence.
With the establishment of the Centre of Excellence in Optometry, YABATECH reaffirms its commitment to enhancing healthcare services and combating blindness in the region.
