In a recent working visit to Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, expressed his admiration for the institution’s exceptional maintenance culture, which has preserved the beauty and functionality of its facilities for over 77 years. His visit, held on Friday at the Yusuf Grillo Auditorium, highlighted the collaborative efforts of the governing council, management, staff, and students.

The Minister announced an exciting development: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the transition of YABATECH into a university. Dr. Alausa assured that the necessary processes for this transformation are underway. He noted that with over 200 doctorate-holding staff and a strong reputation in technical and vocational education, YABATECH is well-equipped to meet the standards required for university status.
Focus on Technical Education: Addressing the Japa Syndrome
Dr. Alausa also discussed the government’s commitment to revitalizing technical and vocational education, stressing its importance in combating the ongoing ‘Japa Syndrome’—the trend of young Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad. He highlighted the administration’s focus on integrating subjects like artificial intelligence and robotics into the curriculum, aiming to equip students with skills that allow them to thrive both locally and internationally.

In his welcome address, YABATECH Rector Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Abdul expressed gratitude for the Minister’s visit, marking it as a pivotal moment in the college’s journey of academic excellence.
