Just In: Gabonese Army Officers Stage Coup, Oust Bongo and Declare Assumption of Power

According to the BBC, army officers in Gabon appeared on national television on Wednesday to declare their assumption of power. His removal from office would put an end to his family’s 53-year rule of Gabon.

They claimed to be nullifying the election results from the previous day, in which President Ali Bongo was pronounced the victor.

We have chosen to safeguard peace by overthrowing the ruling dictatorship, the soldiers, who identified themselves as CTRI (The Committee of Transition and Restoration of Institutions), stated.

Albert Ondo Ossa, Bongo’s major rival, placed second with 30.77%, according to the electoral commission. Ondo Ossa’s charges of electoral irregularities have been refuted by Bongo’s team.
