Kebbi Government Confirms Deadly Cerebrospinal Meningitis Outbreak
The Kebbi State government has confirmed the death of 26 people following a suspected outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis across three Local Government Areas (LGAs): Aliero, Gwandu, and Jega. The outbreak has sparked concerns among health authorities, prompting swift intervention measures.
Rising Cases of Cerebrospinal Meningitis in Kebbi State
During a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Musa Ismaila, disclosed the alarming statistics related to the disease. According to him, the state recorded 248 suspected cases, with symptoms such as fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and light sensitivity.
“In week seven, we are saddled with the unfortunate situation of an outbreak, with a rising number of cases beyond the usual. A total of 248 suspected cases have been recorded. Eleven samples were taken and sent to the National Reference Laboratory in Abuja for confirmation,” Ismaila stated.
Lab Results Pending as Death Toll Rises
Out of the 11 collected samples, two tested negative for meningitis—one from Jega and another from Gwandu LGAs—while results for the remaining nine samples are still pending. Despite these pending results, the situation remains dire, with the death toll rising as follows:
- Gwandu LGA – 15 deaths
- Jega LGA – 6 deaths
- Aliero LGA – 4 deaths
- Argungu LGA – 1 death
Government and Health Agencies Respond to the Outbreak
In response to the outbreak, the Kebbi State government has launched a collaborative initiative with the World Health Organization (WHO), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to curb the spread of cerebrospinal meningitis.

The state government has also released N30 million for the purchase of drugs and medical supplies aimed at mitigating the effects of the outbreak. The commissioner confirmed that medical commodities and drugs have already been distributed to the affected LGAs.
Isolation Centers Established to Combat Spread
To further manage the outbreak, isolation centers have been set up in Gwandu, Jega, and Aliero LGAs to provide immediate treatment for affected individuals. The health ministry has emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and prompt medical intervention to reduce fatalities.

Health experts advise the public to be vigilant and seek medical attention immediately if they experience any of the following symptoms associated with cerebrospinal meningitis:
- Severe headaches
- High fever
- Neck stiffness

- Sensitivity to light
- Confusion or difficulty concentrating
To prevent further spread of the disease, the health ministry urges residents to practice the following:
- Maintain proper hygiene by washing hands frequently.
- Avoid overcrowded places, as meningitis spreads through respiratory droplets.
- Ensure proper ventilation in homes and public areas.
- Seek immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto Supports Public Health Efforts
The Kebbi State government, under the leadership of Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, has reassured residents that essential medications and medical support have been made available across health centers in the state.
“We are taking all necessary steps to ensure that this outbreak is contained. We urge the public to cooperate with health officials and report any suspected cases immediately,” said the Commissioner for Health.
