Lagos Workers Ground Banks and Trains in NLC Nationwide Strike
In response to the directives of the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, affiliates in Lagos State initiated an indefinite nationwide strike on Tuesday.
The decision, arising from the National Executive Council meeting on November 13, 2023, was a protest against the Federal Government’s alleged neglect of workers’ concerns, encompassing issues like minimum wage, insecurity, corruption, and governance.
Despite a government warning on November 13, cautioning against the strike as contempt of court due to a restraining order from the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, the unions proceeded.
Secretary General of the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers, Mr. Segun Esan, confirmed the railway’s participation, emphasizing that all railway workers were duty-bound to join the strike, resulting in a complete halt of train services.
President of the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions, Mr. Oluwole Olusoji, reported that members had received compliance advice. He stressed the need to safeguard lives and property during the strike, with continuous monitoring of unfolding events.
