Nationwide Strike Commences Following Unresolved Labor Issues
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have initiated a nationwide strike, as previously announced a week ago, with various affiliated unions actively participating in the industrial action.
In a Tuesday morning Facebook post, the NLC shared circulars from the unions, signifying their adherence to the directive. Notable unions involved include the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP), the National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees, the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE), the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), the National Union of Electricity Employees, and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).
This strike follows an incident two weeks ago in Imo State, where NLC National President Joe Ajaero and other members faced physical assault during a demonstration over “non-payment of salaries and pensions for 44 months and violation of other labor rights.” Some perceive this protest as an effort to impact Governor Hope Uzodimma’s re-election bid in the recent governorship election.
Despite a restraining order from the National Industrial Court (NIC) due to an impasse with the Imo State Government, the unions, in a Monday statement, instructed workers nationwide to cease their services from midnight. The Joint National Executive Council (NEC) of NLC and TUC emphasized this decision, directing affiliates and state councils to circulate notices for maximum compliance.
