NAFDAC Seizes Unregistered and Expired Pharmaceuticals Worth N20m In Kaduna
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) confiscated N20 million in unregistered/expired aphrodisiacs and other pharmaceuticals in Kaduna State on Monday.
The seizures were made during a raid on 26 stores at the Sabon Gari market in the state’s Zaria LGA.
The pharmaceuticals seized were microgynon, which were meant to be supplied free to internally displaced people, and oxytocin (injection for mothers who delivered), which needed to be stored at a specified temperature but were discovered in the open.
Tamanuwa Andrew, the Deputy Director in charge of NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, Kaduna Office, told reporters following the search that the continuous exercise was aimed at eliminating markets for substandard and fraudulent pharmaceuticals.

The NAFDAC Deputy Director stated that counterfeit, outdated, and substandard pharmaceuticals posed significant issues to the entire world, particularly Nigeria, a developing country.
“The seized aphrodisiacs were determined to have up to 200 strength milligrammes, which was more than the agency’s registration of 100mg,” NAFDAC said.
He described some of the difficulties, such as increasing hospitalisation, resistance development, and treatment failure, which culminated in death.
Andrew, further stated that the unpatriotic businessmen/women targeted pharmaceuticals with a high volume of use, such as antimalarial, antibiotics, and hypertension medications, among others, for disease treatment.
The deputy director added that one of the tactics used by NAFDAC to diminish or minimise the threat of inferior and fraudulent products was to continually remove them from circulation.
