Tinubu Urges Military to Intensify Security Efforts, Pledges Continued Modernization
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the Nigerian Armed Forces to step up their operations to effectively tackle Nigeria’s multifaceted security challenges, emphasizing that national security is central to democratic stability, regional peace, and economic growth.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the induction ceremony of two newly acquired Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters on Friday, President Tinubu called for intensified action from the military, urging them to rise to the occasion in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

President Tinubu stated that the defense of Nigeria’s democracy hinges on a military that is well-prepared, well-equipped, and well-trained. He noted that the fight against insecurity must remain a national priority if Nigeria is to achieve social stability and attract meaningful investment.
“A democratically stable Nigeria is fundamental to our national progress and regional peace,” he said. “We recognize that the security of a nation is intrinsically linked to its economic growth and social stability.”
He emphasized that the government is focused on peace and prosperity as major pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that military efforts are crucial in defeating the enemies of progress.
“You must, therefore, step up and intensify your efforts at conclusively ending the multi-dimensional security challenges facing our dear country,” he urged.
Tinubu Pledges Continued Investment in Military Modernization
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian military, President Tinubu promised continuous investment in modern defense technologies to boost operational capabilities.
“My administration will remain steadfast in modernizing the armed forces,” he affirmed. “We will continue to invest in cutting-edge defense technologies and provide our military with the resources needed to counter both conventional and asymmetric threats.”
He said the newly inducted helicopters would enhance Nigeria’s strategic capabilities and create a secure environment that encourages local and foreign investments.
Military Must Be Ready for Regional Peacekeeping
Beyond addressing domestic security concerns, Tinubu urged the Nigerian Armed Forces to stay alert to regional and global security dynamics, particularly conflicts in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
“The Nigerian Armed Forces must, therefore, be prepared not only to address domestic security concerns but also to participate in regional and international peacekeeping efforts that promote stability and collective security,” he said.

Air Force Chief Hails Modernization Drive
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, described the acquisition of the Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters as a significant milestone in the Air Force’s modernization efforts. He highlighted the aircraft’s dual utility in both military operations and humanitarian services.
“They are designed to operate in challenging environments, providing critical support to both military and civil operations,” Abubakar noted.
He also revealed that since 2024, the Nigerian Air Force has received nine new aircraft, with 49 more scheduled for delivery over the next two years. The upcoming acquisitions include additional Agusta helicopters, AH-1 Zulu attack helicopters, M-346 light combat jets, and C-295 airlift platforms.
Trained Personnel and Local Innovations Strengthen Self-Reliance
Air Marshal Abubakar stated that eight pilots and 18 engineers had been trained for the new aircraft, with more personnel currently undergoing training abroad. He praised the ongoing local innovations in aircraft maintenance and rocket retrofitting, calling them essential steps toward self-reliance in defense production.
“These platforms will enhance our precision strike and air mobility capabilities,” he said, stressing the need for a responsive Air Force capable of rapid deployment in today’s volatile security landscape.
