On Thursday, the Nasarawa State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal postponed making a decision about the case contesting the results of the state’s 2023 governorship election.
David Ombugadu, the People’s Democratic Party’s candidate for governor, is contesting the announcement that Governor Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress is the election’s victor.
The adoption of all parties’ written addresses in the case was set for September 14, 2023, by the tribunal.
Judge Ezekiel Ajayi, the chairman of the three-person Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, postponed his decision following the acceptance of the final written addresses by counsel for the petitioner and the first, second, and third respondents on Thursday.
He further reassured the parties that they will hear from the tribunal about the day of judgement through their solicitors.
Kanu Agabi (SAN), the petitioner’s main attorney, had informed the tribunal that he had adopted all of the justifications presented in his written addresses.
The petitioner’s attorney requested that the tribunal proclaim the PDP candidate the winner of the election and declare the Nasarawa state governorship election invalid due to violations of the Electoral Act.
Agabi went on to say that there was no connection between the votes cast through the IREV portal and the proclaimed outcome.

According to records in the IREV portal and data from the BVAS machines that were utilised at numerous polling places throughout the state, the petitioner’s attorney claimed that the PDP candidate received the most number of votes cast during the election.
Isiaka Dikko (SAN), Hassan Liman (SAN), and Wole Olanikpekun (SAN), the attorneys for the Independent National Electoral Commission, the APC, and Governor Sule, respectively, adopted their final written addresses and urged the tribunal to dismiss the case for lack of merit.
