Only 25% of Nigerian Children Can Read Simple Sentences – UNICEF

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has disclosed that only 25% of Nigerian children between the ages of 7 and 14 are able to perform simple math problems or read simple sentences.

This was stated in a statement by Cristian Munduate, a UNICEF official in Nigeria, on Tuesday to commemorate the International Day of Education.

Further, Munduate of UNICEF exhorted the presidential candidates in the February elections to prioritize education in the run-up to the polls.

The UN Secretary General’s Transforming Education Summit will take place in September 2022, and UNICEF Munduate said, “On this International Day of Education, I join the global call to ‘invest in people, prioritise education,’ and fulfill President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitments made there to end the global learning crisis.”

“In Nigeria, 75% of kids between the ages of 7 and 14 are unable to read a straightforward phrase or work out a simple math problem. In the first three years of school, students must be able to learn to read in order to be able to read to learn.

“As Nigeria’s presidential elections approach, I call on all presidential candidates to prioritize adequate investments in education in their platforms on behalf of UNICEF and the children in Nigeria.”
