UNILAG Unveils First Substantive Female Vice-Chancellor

Professor Folasade Ogunsola was appointed as the 13th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) by the institution’s selection committee on Friday night.

The change meant that Ogunsola, who is set to succeed outgoing VC Prof. Toyin Ogundipe next month, would be the first female to hold the role at the 60-year-old university.

Ogunsola, the late prominent geographer Prof. Akin Mabogunje’s daughter, has served the institution in a variety of positions.

Ogunsola was the Provost of the College of Medicine in Idi Araba, Lagos, and also served as Ogundipe’s deputy vice chancellor.

When Ogundipe was dismissed from office by the then-Governing Council led by Dr Wale Babalakin, SAN around two years ago, Ogunsola served as acting VC for about three months before the Federal Government reinstated Ogundipe.

Credible News reported Monday, at the start of a year-long celebration of the school’s 60th anniversary that a new vice-chancellor, would emerged Friday.

The Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Dr Lanre Tejuosho, gave the clue that a new vice-chancellor will be appointed by Friday.

According to Tejuosho, the new vice-chancellor, Ogunsola will be picked in a credible and transparent manner and hoped that God would provide the university with a person who would likewise lift the bar of the standard at the university.

Meanwhile, before Ogunsola was unveiled, Mrs Oluwafunmilayo Adekunle, Friday was chosen by the Council to serve as the institution’s next bursar.

Beginning on November 3, 2022, Both Ogunsola and Adekunle will serve as the UNILAG vice-chancellor and bursar respectively.

This is stated in a statement issued on Thursday by UNILAG’s communication unit.

The announcement read, “The Governing Council of the University of Lagos accepted the nomination of Mrs. Oluwafunmilayo Yetunde Adekunle as the next Bursar of the University during its meeting on Thursday, October 6, 2022.
